Assuming your tent is used and in need of a good cleaning? Before you waterproof your tent follow our cleaning instructions first. Once the tent has been thoroughly cleaned; Treat by applying Nikwax Tent and Gear Proof while the fabric is still damp, spray or apply with a brush generously and evenly on the uncoated side of the fabric. Check carefully to make sure no areas of the fabric have been missed. Wipe up runs with a damp cloth. Allow to soak into cloth for 5 minutes and then wipe all excess (drips, runs, puddles) away with a damp cloth. Note:: Failure to do so may leave a white residue. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second, rewet the fabric before applying so that it is damp to the touch.
For
waterproofing the floor of your tent we recommend using McNett's Revivex Tent
Sure Tent Floor Sealant. This along with a good seam (such as seam seal) sealant
application to all seams will ensure a dry and comfortable experience in foul
weather.
Clean and dry all surfaces. Pour small amount of Tent Sure into plastic container.
Apply a thin film onto fabric with a squeegee or medium-bristle brush. Apply
to coated side of fabric (usually the inside of the tent). For best results
use an even, sweeping motion to avoid puddles or over-application. Some high-wear
areas like tent floor openings may need two applications. Note:: Two thin
applications are more effective than one thick application. Let Tent Sure
dry fully for 24 hours at room temperature before use. Keep treated fabric
surfaces separated while drying. Test for dryness before use or folding.
Backpacks ::
Unless
you have purchased a backpack that claimed to be waterproof; making an ordinary
pack waterproof is nearly impossible. With all of the stitching, zippers,
pockets and openings; a waterproofing treatment will not create a waterproof
pack. At best with spray-on treatments like Nikwax Tent and Gear Proof, one
can make a pack water resistant, but it will never be waterproof. It certainly
can't hurt to treat a pack with a waterproof treatment. It will aid in the
resistance of mist, fog and light rain, as well as offer extra wear resistance.
Your best bet against a downpour is a pack cover or a poncho. Treat the same
as you would your tent as described above.
Sleeping bags ::
Clean the bag with Nikwax Down Wash if it is a down bag or use Tech Wash for synthetic bags. Refer to our Clean section for the best methods for clean sleeping bags. Non-detergent soaps clean without harming water-repellency and help to restore the bag's loft. Nikwax waterproofing treatments are made of breathable elastic water-repellent elastomer, called TX.10, that bond to the fibers of the fabric and fill material. Treating sleeping bags with Nikwax makes them less susceptible to humidity and allows them to stay drier longer.
Waterproofing Down-Filled Sleeping Bags ::
Treat
the entire bag (both down and shell fabric) with Nikwax Downproof Wash-In.
Add the Water-Repellent Treatment directly into the washing basin after it
has been thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. Wash in the appropriate of solution
given the type of material of the shell and the filled type.
